Armed Israeli settlers beat Agence France-Presse photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh in the West Bank while Israeli soldiers watched, according to reporting by the Guardian Middle East.

Ashtiyeh, a 58-year-old veteran photographer covering violence against olive farmers, was assaulted by a group of settlers who struck him with rifle butts. He was hospitalized following the attack. The assault occurred in view of approximately a dozen armed Israeli soldiers.

Ashtiyeh was clearly marked as press at the time of the incident. He had been documenting what the Guardian describes as worsening settler violence against Palestinian olive farmers in the occupied West Bank when the attack took place.

The Guardian did not provide additional details about Ashtiyeh's injuries, the specific location of the assault, or statements from Israeli military or settler representatives regarding the incident.
